The Cru Vigna Vico is an elegant wine with extraordinary complexity. The Nerello Mascalese grapes that make it come from ancient vines whose yields are so incredibly low that only half a bottle of wine is produced per vine. Intoxicating and powerful, this is a hedonistic blend of herbs and spices that combines intense savoury notes with mouth-coating tannins that entwine with a sharp and lasting acidity. Minerals from the volcanic soil give this a fine and textured mouth-feel and will allow this wine to age gracefully and sufficiently for quite some time, providing even more complexity and roundness in the long term.
Passopisciaro is one of the oldest vineyards today. The old pre-phylloxera vines were planted on lava terrain terraces in an amphitheatre setting after eruptions during the 1600s and the actual parcel of land where the indigenous grape varieties are grown was one of the few that were not submerged by the lava flow of 1879.
Only 3000 bottles produced. It is aged in French oak tonneaux for 12-14 months, steel vats for at least 3 months and spends a minimum of 10 months in the bottle.
Food should be languorous and sexy: juicy fillet steak, slow-roasted garlicky lamb, ripe Gorgonzola, rich dark chocolate,
Film: has to be The Godfather (parts 1, 2 or 3), Ford Coppola’s cinematic masterpiece oozing with drama and intrigue.
