Syrah has become an increasingly integral part of the Tuscan landscape in the last decade and thankfully so. Syrah has an affinity for the dense clay soils of Tuscany, coaxing out the grapes’ perfume and also producing low yields with smaller, more concentrated berries, giving it a distinctive Tuscan feel. The climate here, which is generally hot and dry during the summer, is ideal for Syrah and being hardy and naturally earlier to ripen than its counterparts, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, by the time the autumn rains are a factor, the Syrah is safely in the winery. With a skin maceration of around 21 days, 12 months ageing in French tonneaux and a further 6 months fining in bottle, the colour is a brilliant inky purple with hints of red violet. On the nose you find classic, spicy aromas of Syrah, white pepper and cinnamon combined with concentrated ripe fruit. Full bodied with silky tannins, this is a perfect match for slow cooked or braised meats, rich stews and aged cheeses such as Pecorino, Provolone or chunks of Parmesan. Serve between 16-18 degrees and open at least an hour and a half before serving.
